The 11th International Conference on Industrial Ecology was held at Leiden University in the Netherlands from July 2nd to 5th, 2023. A total of 15 individuals including faculty members and students from the School of Environment attended the conference.
At the opening ceremony on July 2nd, Professor Xu Ming from the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, President of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE), delivered a speech, looking back on the efforts made by ISIE since 2019 for promoting development, facilitating exchange and cooperation in the field of industrial ecology. He also expressed a warm welcome to all participants of the conference and gratitude to the event organizers. Hans Bruyninckx, former Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, and Janez Potočnik, Co-Chair of the International Resource Panel of the United Nations Environment Program, were invited to give keynote speeches.
Fifteen representatives from the School of Environment, including Associate Professor Li Nan, Associate Professor Wang Chunyan as well as postdoctoral researchers and students from teams led by Professor Xu Ming, Professor Chen Lvjun, Professor Wang Can and Professor Tian Jinping, participated in the conference. They gave 8 oral reports and 7 poster presentations.
Throughout the conference, SOE faculty members and students discussed actively with academics from around the world about how industrial ecology can contribute more comprehensive and diverse solutions for sustainable development in the future. ISIE, founded in 2001, aims to promote exchange and collaboration in the field of industrial ecology, advancing sustainable development and enhancing resource utilization efficiency.
The International Conference on Industrial Ecology is a biennial event organized by ISIE. Prior conferences have been successfully held 10 times in the Netherlands, the United States, Sweden, Canada, Portugal, South Korea, the United Kingdom, China, and other countries. ISIE2023, the first large-scale offline conference after the pandemic, attracted a record-high attendance of over 850 participants, featuring 99 themes, 7 keynote speeches, and over 300 posters and presentations. The 12th International Conference on Industrial Ecology (ISIE2025) is scheduled to be held in Singapore in 2025.
