Tsinghua University-led International Standard in the Field of Reclaimed Water Wins China Standards Innovation and Contribution Award

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation of China announced the winners of the China Standards Innovation and Contribution Award 2022. The ISO international standard Water reuse in urban areas — Guidelines for centralized water reuse system, led by Professor Hu Hongying's team from the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, was awarded the second prize for Standard Project in the China Standards Innovation and Contribution Award 2022.

The award-winning project includes two international standards: Water reuse in urban areas — Guidelines for centralized water reuse system — Part 1: Design principle of a centralized water reuse system (ISO 20760-1:2018) and Water reuse in urban areas — Guidelines for centralized water reuse system —Part 2: Management of a centralized water (ISO 20760-2:2017). These standards were collaboratively developed by Tsinghua University, the China National Institute of Standardization, the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other institutions. These two standards are fundamental international standards in the field of reclaimed water, aiming to ensure the safety of water reuse. They outline key processes, technical design requirements, and management objectives for reclaimed water systems, providing a basis and guidance for the planning, design, management, and evaluation of such systems. This award signifies that the achievements of institutions such as Tsinghua University in the standardization of reclaimed water have received high praise and recognition.

The China Standards Innovation and Contribution Award, approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and established by the State Administration for Market Regulation and Standardization Administration, is awarded biennially. It is the highest honor for standardization across industries in China. This award focuses on implementing the National Standards Development Outline, specifically recognizing standard projects that effectively support the implementation of major national strategies, promote technological or managerial innovation, and yield significant economic, social, and ecological benefits.
