The China Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recently announced the recipients of its Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for 2022. SOE’s PhD graduate Wen Yifan won the award for her dissertation titled “Dynamic Characterizing of On-road Traffic Emissions and their Air Quality Impacts based on Machine Learning Methods”. And it also won the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award 2022, Tsinghua University. The dissertation was completed under the supervision of Professor Wu Ye.
China SAE Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, established by the China Society of Automotive Engineers, aims to promote scientific development and talent cultivation of China’s automotive industry and improve the quality of doctoral study programs. It is a highly influential and recognized award. The 2022 award went to ten winners this year after formal review, preliminary evaluation and online thesis defense.
Wen Yifan graduated with her bachelor’s degree from SOE, Tsinghua University in 2017 and obtained her doctoral degree also from Tsinghua in 2022. Wen’s doctoral dissertation focuses on the analysis of motor vehicle emissions and their dynamic impacts on air quality. This study aims to significantly improve the spatiotemporal resolution and dynamics of on-road emission mapping and air quality responding by utilizing traffic big data and machine learning methods. It intends to play an important role in traffic emission control and air quality management for future China. Wen Yifan has published 7 first-author papers in SCI-indexed journals during her PhD, including The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Environmental Science & Technology Letters, and Applied Energy. She has also applied for 2 patents and 2 software copyrights. In addition, she has received a number of awards, including the National Scholarship for PhD students and Qian Yi Scholarship. So far, Wen Yifan has been elected for the 2022 Innovation Postdoctoral Scholar Program and “Shuimu Tsinghua Scholar” Program, with Hao Jiming, Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, as her postdoc supervisor.
