The 2nd Sustainable Solid Waste Management Seminar (SSMS) was held in SOE on May 31.

SSMS was co-hosted by the Key Laboratory for Solid Waste Management and Environment Safety, the Ministry of Education of China (SWMES), Research Center of Sanitary Engineering technology, Ministry of Housing and Rural-Urban Development of the People’s Republic of China (MOHURD), and the Research Center on Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal Technology, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences. It ’s an annual seminar which focuses on one hot spot in the area of solid waste management. For SSMS this time, Mr. Yang Hongyi, Deputy Director of the Division of City Administration and Environment, Department of city construction, MOHURD, Ms. Zhang Hongying, Deputy Director of the Division for Solid Waste Management, Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment, and Prof. Yu Gang, Dean of SOE, were present at the opening ceremony and delivered speeches respectively.

The topic of this seminar covered municipal solid waste sorting and recycling. The seminar aimed at summarizing the successful experience of municipal solid waste sorting and recycling pilot projects in China. Through analyzing the problems and challenges which occurred, they endeavored to discover proper methods that could fit in the Chinese situation. More than ten experts from institutes, government, enterprises, NGOs and pilot communities, gave reports and shared their experiences. Of the more than 150 attendees who took part in the seminar, there were delegates from the government, universities, institutes, enterprises, NGOs and environmental websites.
