课程主要内容包括环境与地球科学的基本范畴与基本概念；环境与地球系统的基本结构、功能及主要问题；地球环境问题的演化与现代环境科学兴起；环境学、地学与生态学的基本理论与方法等；旨在通过教学使本专业的学生对地球环境系统的结构有一全貌认识，了解构成地球环境系统的水、气、土壤、生物等圈层结构的基本状态和物质能量过程；了解区域与全球重大环境问题以及中国的环境问题，为后续专业课程的学习和专业意识的树立打下良好基础。

This course introduces basic subjects in environmental and earth sciences. Course content includes basic structure, functions, and challenges of the environmental and earth systems as well as fundamental theories and methods in environmental science, earth science, and ecology. Students will develop a basic understanding of the environmental and earth systems, the status and material/energy processes of key elements of the earth system such as water, air, soil, and biosphere, and critical global, regional, and national environmental challenges. These knowledge are expected to build a solid foundation for subsequential coursework and professional development.
