During this extraordinary year, from July 20th to 28th, Tsinghua University will host a special online Global Summer School (GSS) 2020, entitled Toward a Post-Pandemic World. Bringing together Tsinghua’s top-quality educational resources and well-known Chinese and overseas professors through lectures, webinars, and interactive tours and performances, GSS will delve into our post-pandemic world from a variety of topics, including economics, politics, society, education, climate change, and leadership. Tsinghua GSS welcomes students from different backgrounds to come together to understand the opportunities and challenges for our world post-pandemic and to explore solutions for a sustainable future.
Let’s have a peek at what will be on the GSS agenda for Day 2!
Day 2: Learning Together Sustainably: Learning to Transform Oneself and Society
It is a universal goal to become creative, active, and resilient lifelong learners. The treasure within education was once identified as four pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together (UNESCO, 1996). Today, more than ever, the treasure within education calls for a fifth pillar, learning to transform oneself and society, so that we can live together sustainably for both survival and development.

Because of the pandemic, many of us are now studying online, but how can we learn effectively? To begin day 2, you will take part in a three-stage design thinking marathon to create a special Handbook for University Online Learners. The very process of creating this handbook is a way of learning how to learn and live together by overcoming physical, social, and cultural barriers, which is what the Tsinghua GSS is all about.
So how has the pandemic impacted our education system so far? In our keynote speech for day 2 we will welcome renowned ProfessorShi Jinghuan to explore this question. Professor Shi will share with us research on longitudinal student engagement and her latest findings on online learning during the pandemic this past half year. Professor Shi is the Director of the Academic Committee from the Institute of Education at Tsinghua University, and has served as a core member of the AUA AHEO project since 2016. Professor Shi is the Principal Investigator of the China College Student Survey (CCSS).

Professor Zhong Zhou and Professor Liu Jing will join us for Day 2 to share their rich experience and knowledge in the field of education.
Professor Zhong Zhou is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Education, Tsinghua University. Her teaching and research interests include international and intercultural education, education for sustainable development, and teaching and learning innovation.
Professor Liu Jing is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education, Tohoku University. He is also a research fellow at the Center for Excellence in the School of Education, the University of Tokyo. His research areas include the sociology of education, international and comparative education, and education policy studies, with a focus on educational development in East and South-East Asia.
To finish Day 2 we will showcase your designs for the Handbook for University Online Learners in a webinar and discuss how we can learn more effectively online for the betterment of ourselves and society.
