On December 28, 2014, GEP held a Geneva SAICM feedback workshop in school of Environment. GEP Prof. Gang Yu, Dean Assistant Ye Wu, Executive Director of the Basel Convention Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific Jinhui Li, Program Director Dongbei Yue, GEP Assistant Qian Zhao, GEP instructor Yang Hua and more than 50 students attended the meeting.

7 GEP students held a mock conference of OEWG2, they introduced the outline and the detailed topics of SAICM and shared the experiences with the other GEP students. As the team leader, Prof. Jinhui Li fully confirmed the excellent performance of the participating students. Gang Yu has high expectations for students actively carry out international communication, people engaged in the global environment filed should have good adaptability and psychology, hope the students to study hard, make continuous progress, showing good example of Tsinghua students in the stage of international environmental stage.

The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a policy framework to promote chemical safety around the world. SAICM has as its overall objective the achievement of the sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle so that, by 2020, chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on human health and the environment. This “2020 goal” was adopted by the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 as part of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.

Adopted by the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) on 6 February 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a policy framework to foster the sound management of chemicals.

SAICM was developed by a multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral Preparatory Committee and supports the achievement of the goal agreed at the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development of ensuring that, by the year 2020, chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health.
