Dr. Rolph Payet visited GEP Top Talk on 26th October, 2015, which was organized by GEP senior and junior students and hosted by professor Gang Yu.
Firstly, Prof. YU introduced GEP to Dr. Payet, included curriculum and internship. Dr. Payet gave a description on his life path at the beginning of his lecture. Several questions were raised by both the organizers and the participants during the interview. The questions covered different fields, such as the qualities and personalities for working in international organizations, IPCC reports, environmental issues in developing countries, environmental and social responsibilities of media, language learning, tourism in Seychelles, etc. At the end of the interview, Dr. Payet gave many valuable suggestions to GEP Students. Firstly, he suggested that GEP to organize some debates between different groups and invite guests from NGOs, industries, governments and other organizations so that the students can hear from everyone and get to know about different opinions from different parts. What’s more, the internship is very important and students should not only work in developed countries, but also in developing countries.
Rolph Payet is currently Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention Secretariat. He was previously serving as Minister for Environment and Energy in the Seychelles. He is also the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Seychelles and Associate Professor at the Linnaeus University in Sweden. He currently also serves as Blue Ribbon Panel Member of the World Bank Global Partnership on Oceans. He was previously Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change, the UN Group of Experts on the Regular Process and Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum. Rolph Payet is founding member/trustee of the Global Island Partnership, the Sea Level Rise Foundation, the Seychelles University Foundation, the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology, the Island Conservation Society and the Silhouette Foundation.
