1. Overview of the Program

Aiming at the development of technical and sustainable solutions that minimize the impact of human activities on the environment, the International Master Program in Environmental Engineering and Management covers the areas of environmental engineering and science, and environmental management and planning.

The program is designed to train students with solid theoretical and systematic professional knowledge and the skills in the field of environmental engineering and management, and to prepare to approach the forefront of environmental engineering and management with a combination of coursework and research components. Highly flexible study is a distinguishing feature of this program which allow for development of either intensive or broadened abilities of the students.

2. Application Guidance

2.1 Degree Offered

Doctorate of philosophy

Ph.D. program in Environmental Science and Engineering

Students must complete the course of study to meet the credits requirement. A research dissertation is considered an essential part of the degree.

2.2 Professional Courses Offered in English

Courses Structure

The Ph.D. is a research oriented degree that requires in-depth knowledge of a specific topic of study. Program of study is highly individualized, but consists of two main components: course study and independent research. Students are admitted to a specific project of study and assigned a supervisor. While most students enter in the fall, it is possible to begin your studies starting in the spring term. Admission to the doctoral program does not constitute Ph.D. candidacy. Ph.D. candidacy is significant mile stone along the path to the doctoral degree, and typically signifies an individual that is prepared to embark upon an individual investigation of a novel research topic. Completion of the subsequent research occurs with the successful, oral defense of one’s written dissertation. The study period of the program is 3-4 years.

During the study for Ph.D. degree, at least 16credits, which includes 4 credits for public compulsory courses, 7 credits for subjective specialized courses (containing at least 3 credits for basic theory courses and no less than 4 credits for basic theory courses), as well as at least 5 credits for required course, are required for the degree. Self-study courses are excluded.

Courses Offered:

Spring Semester:
Advanced Environmental Chemistry
Advanced Wastewater Treatment
Restoration Ecology and Application
Global Environmental Issues
Hazardous Waste Disposal Technology

Autumn Semester:
Fundamentals of Environmental Biotechnology
Advanced Water Distribution System and Management
Advanced Water Supply Engineering
Environmental Management and Policy
Integrated Solid Waste Management
Air Pollution Control Technology
Biofilms: fundamentals to applications

Note: Relevant courses for thesis from other schools or departments can also be selected. Most courses given in Chinese are also available for foreign students.

2.3. Independent-study courses

Systematic independent-study on research topic related specialized knowledge should be developed under the guidance of supervisor, which can be listed into training program.

2.4. Qualifying Examination

The intent of the qualifying examination is to ascertain the breadth of the student’s comprehension of fundamental facts and principles that apply in environmental science and engineering, and whether the student has the ability to think incisively and critically about the theoretical and the practical aspects of these fields. The examiners should satisfy themselves, by unanimous vote, that the student demonstrates sufficient content command and ability to design and produce an acceptable dissertation. The examination will ordinarily be taken in the second  year of the doctoral program, and passing of the examination gives students the advancement to candidacy.

2.5 Dissertation

A dissertation proposal must be presented and approved at least twelve months before the dissertation defense. The proposal should be prepared in consultation with the dissertation committee. The outcome of the proposal defense is decided by the dissertation committee. Potential outcomes include failure and pass. Successful completion of the dissertation proposal report is a significant milestone towards completion of the Ph.D. degree
The dissertation defense will occur after completing the degree’s requirements. It is required that the Ph.D. dissertation leads to published papers on peer-reviewed journals with at least 2.0 of impact factors in total to get a Ph.D. degree. Three to four months before the defense, the candidates need to give final academic reports to all the Ph.D. supervisors in the school, who will vote for the approval of their defense applications. Doctoral defenses are open to the public. Candidates are required to submit the details (date, time location) of the meeting, a dissertation abstract, and a listing of all committee members to the administrative staff prior to the scheduled defense. Potential outcomes include failure and a pass, and are decided by majority vote of the committee. Failure of the thesis defense requires that a student substantially rework the dissertation and defend the modified dissertation within twelve months. Candidates passing the dissertation defense are typically required to modify the dissertation as directed by the committee. In either case the candidate will be informed of the outcome in a meeting with the supervisor.
