Oxford Materials Science Students Visit Campus, Meet Tsinghua Peers

A group of about 20 students from the Department of Materials Science at OxfordUniversity visited Tsinghua March 15 as part of their annual excursion abroad to study how materials science is taught in other countries and how it is used in local industry.

After a brief introduction to TsinghuaUniversity and to the Materials Science and Engineering department, the students toured the campus, accompanied by 20 Tsinghua fourth-year Materials Science and Engineering students. The sunny afternoon walk gave both groups of students plenty of time to discuss their different experiences as university students.

While in Beijing the students plan to visit one start-up company in the Beijing Technical Development area producing high temperature superconducting wires, as well as visiting the Beijing site of the largest semiconductor manufacturer in China. They will also take a trip to a casting factory in Tianjin.

On Monday, the Oxford students visited the British Embassy for a talk by Dr. Robin Porter, the Counselor for Science and Technology, about the “UK-China: Partners in Science” program, which aims to build better links between scientists at all levels in the two countries.
