Ten Top Tsinghua News in 2004

 

Under the organization of Tsinghua News Center and based on the online voting and experts rating, Ten Top Tsinghua News in 2004 have been selected. The following list is organized in chronological order in terms of the time these events/news being reported:

 

Tsinghua's new administration took office.

11 Tsinghua research projects won the State Scientific and Technological Award. Among these projects, “Research and industrialization of mobile/relocatable container inspection system with accelerator as radiation source” won first prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award. Academician Liu Dongsheng and academician Wang Yongzhi, two alumni of Tsinghua, received the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award.

9 Tsinghua undergraduate courses were listed as elite courses after a national-wide appraisal, taking the lead among colleges and universities in China.

Jiang Ze Min, the former President of the PRC, wrote back to students of Department of Electronic Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering and encouraged them to work hard and make contributions to the motherland.

Nobel Prize winner N. C. Yang teaches physics for freshmen at Tsinghua.

 

Tsinghua made special efforts to promote substantive cooperation with some world-class universities including Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, Oxford University, University of Cambridge, Cornell University, RWTH Aachen.
Prof. Andrew Chi-chih Yao, prominent computer scientist and the Turning Award winner joined Tsinghua. Premier Wen Jiabao came to look in Prof. Yao before the 20th Teacher's Day.
Among the 80 first-level disciplines evaluated in the period between 2002-2004, 13 disciplines of Tsinghua received the highest evaluation of the Ministry of Education, taking the lead among colleges and universities in China.

In China's Scientific Papers Rankings 2003, Tsinghua ranked first nationwide for the number of research papers collected by SCI, EI, and ISTP respectively. According to SCI, in 2003, 1 691 research papers authored by Tsinghua faculty and students have been cited by other publications.

The first backbone network of the next-generation Internet, another breakthrough achieved by the Tsinghua-based CERNET networking center, was announced to go into formal operation on Dec. 25. CERNET2 is the first network based on pure Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) technology.
