The fifth Chinese American Networking Symposium (CANS) , held recently in Miami , Florida , USA and hosted by Florida International University , shed spotlight on the future application of networks technology. The theme of the event was "Toward Next Generation Advanced Networks".
The Chinese American Networking Symposium (CANS) was initiated in the summer of 1998 by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST), USA , and the University of Maryland (UMCP) and co-sponsored by the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) and the China Science and Technology Network (CSTNET). The first CANS, which attracted from China more than 50 executives, network industry leaders and officials and from the USA over 60 network researchers and administrators, was held with optimistic success in Washington , DC in January, 1999. Since then it has become an annual event held alternatively in the USA and China with more and more participants. CANS2000 and CANS2002 were held in Beijing and Shanghai separately. In 2004 it was the fifth annual event with China Education and Research Network (CERNET) as one big sponsor.
CANS functions as a Sino-US network technology forum, innovations inspired, memoranda inscribed and advanced applications introduced.
In CANS2004 to demonstrate how important role the advanced networks will play in the future, at the Symposium banquet violinists in two places, China and the USA, played Mozart concerto together for the first time in history through the network built between Tsinghua University and Florida International University. The concert was supported by DVTS ( Digital Video Transport System ) successfully, showing that DVTS is capable of transferring large digital information flow (more than 20Mbps). The melodious violin music wafting the Pacific Ocean echoed each other.
It was the second successful application of DVTS. The first one is in the field of medicine at Distance Learning and the Internet Conference 2004, which was sponsored by APRU (Association of the Pacific Rim Universities) on October, 12, 2004 .
Teachers from the Central Conservatory of Music showed great interests in this unusual concert. So, the cooperation between Tsinghua and the Central Conservatory of Music in the field of remote presentations via advanced network is on the horizon.
