Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi with his wife visited Tsinghua on December 7. Tsinghua President Gu Binglin met and had a brief talk with Mr. C.A. Ciampi.

After the talk, Mr. C.A.Ciampi delivered a speech entitled “ Italy , European Union and China : Together Towards A Future of Peace” in the Reception Hall of the Main Building. He talked about the friendly historical relation between China and Italy .

“It is up to Chinese and Italians to set out boldly on the productive path of trade, investments, financial transactions, joint scientific and technological projects and new cultural and artistic initiatives,” said the President of the Republic.

He took the cooperation between Tsinghua and Milan Polytechnic as an example and said that the foundation stone laid last June in Tsinghua for an eco-intelligent building co-designed by the Milan Polytechnic and Tsinghua University would be constructed utilizing the latest environmental technologies.

The President of the Republic also talked about the role of the European Union and looked into the future. Tsinghua President Gu hosted the speech.

Carlo Azeglio C iampi was born in 1920 and was elected the President in 1999.
