Shiing-shen Chern (Chen Xingshen), a world-renowned overseas Chinese mathematician and a Tsinghua alumnus (grade 1934), 93, died of illness at his home at Nankai University on Dec. 3. Tsinghua President Gu Binglin and Chen Xi, President of the University Council, sent a telegram of condolence to Nankai University and Professor Chen's family on Dec. 4.
Professor Chen is best known for his achievements in the study of differential geometry. He was born in 1911 in Jiaxing , Zhejiang Province, east China . He graduated from Nankai University in 1930 and then came to Tsinghua University . He graduated from Tsinghua University four years later, and continued his study in the University of Hamburg in Germany .
Professor Chen is the only Chinese to win the Wolf Prize -- the most distinguished award in the international mathematics field
