Eighth International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians 2019

On the morning of June 9th, the opening ceremony of the eighth International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM 2019) took place at Tsinghua University. Chen Xu, Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council, Academician Shing-Tung Yau, the renowned mathematician, Gao Ruiping, Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Lei Chaozi, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, Liu Yuhui, Director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, and Gao Hongjun, Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended this ceremony. More than a thousand Chinese and overseas mathematicians gathered at Tsinghua to discuss current significant developments and explore future directions in both pure and applied mathematics.

The opening ceremony announced and awarded the ICCM Medal of Mathematics, the Chern Prize, and the ICCM International Cooperation Award.

Chen Xu noted that the ICCM provided a high-level exchange platform for Chinese mathematicians. She hoped that the participating scholars would actively share their wisdom, and enjoy the beauty of mathematics in free and enjoyable communication.

Shing-Tung Yau said that mathematics is the foundation of basic disciplines. He hoped to work together with leading scholars at home and abroad to build Chinese mathematics and world mathematics into the most basic and promising science.

This year's conference had a total of 376 speakers, the largest number in its history. During the six-day session, altogether seven world leading mathematicians delivered the ICCM Distinguished Lectures. In addition, nine forum speakers, 34 one-hour speakers, 300 45-minute speakers, and 26 20-minute speakers gave lectures in various fields of mathematics, including number theory, geometry, differential equations, statistics, artificial intelligence, and mathematical physics.

Initiated in 1998 by Professor Shing-Tung Yau, a renowned Chinese mathematician and the director of YMSC, ICCM is a triennial event that brings together Chinese and overseas mathematicians to discuss current significant developments and explore future directions in both pure and applied mathematics.
