Tsinghua University School of Vehicle and Mobility established 


On the morning of April 27th, the inaugural meeting of the Tsinghua University School of Vehicle and Mobility (SVM) was held in the main building. Attending the meeting were over 400 delegates, including Wan Gang, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Xin Guobin, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Chen Qingtai, former Director of the Development Research Center of the State Council and an alumnus of Tsinghua, Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University, Academician Zhong Zhihua, Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Dong Yang, former Executive Vice-Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufactures and an alumnus of Tsinghua, as well as other academicians and experts from the fields of vehicles and transportation at home and abroad, representatives of relevant ministries, enterprises, and universities, teachers and students of various departments and units in the university, and alumni representatives. The meeting was presided over by Li Yibing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee.

President Qiu Yong noted that the establishment of the SVM was an important measure for Tsinghua to serve the country’s strategic needs. The renaming of the Department of Automobiles as the School of Vehicle and Mobility shows Tsinghua’s commitment to actively serve the country’s strategic needs, to cope with challenges in the industry, to focus on the international academic frontier, and to be bravely engaged in the process of self-adjustment and repositioning.

“Facing the new industrial technology revolution, we should further strengthen opening up and exchange to be integrated with international standards. We should stick to the philosophy of talent cultivation and make Tsinghua’s voice heard in engineering education. We should take the initiative to solve China’s technological bottlenecks and make substantial contributions,” said President Qiu.

Following the inaugural meeting the 2019 Forum of Young Scholars in Automotive Technology was held. Experts, scholars and business representatives from domestic and foreign automobile fields conducted academic exchanges around the new development of automobile technology in the world.

Vehicle engineering education has a long history in Tsinghua University. Over the past 87 years, Tsinghua University has educated nearly 7,000 graduates specializing in vehicle engineering and has become an important training base for front-line leaders and key talents in China’s automobile industry and related research and education. In the past two decades, great progress has been made in China’s new energy vehicles. The Department of Automotive Engineering of Tsinghua has taken the lead in developing new energy vehicle research in China, playing an important role in the development of China’s energy conservation and new energy vehicle technology.
