Tsinghua University Commencement Ceremonies
The Tsinghua University Commencement ceremonies 2017 for graduates and undergraduates were held separately in the Comprehensive Gymnasium on the mornings of July 1st and 2nd. Of the graduates, more than 2,000 received Doctorates and over 5,000 received Master’s degrees. More than 3,000 undergraduates completed their studies at Tsinghua University and received Bachelor’s degrees. The President of Tsinghua and Chairman of the Degree Conferral Committee Qiu Yong, Tsinghua University Council Chairman Chen Xu, and other university leaders awarded degrees and certificates to the new graduates.
In his address at the Commencement ceremony for graduate students, President Qiu noted that graduation is a new starting point in life, with a future worth looking forward to, because it is full of infinite possibilities for creation and innovation, and any ideas are likely to become reality. He hoped that the graduates would uphold a quiet and determined spirit in persistent striving toward new heights in life. President Qiu Yong ended by saying that Tsinghua will always be the graduates’ warm home. “We welcome you home any time.”
In his presidential remarks on Sunday, President Qiu told the new graduates that, as the think tanks of modern society, universities have inherited the human civilization of the past and will pass it on the future. Universities are also fountains of hope that mould the future of human beings. As the cradles of new thought, universities do not only safeguard core social values, but also lead social progress. Cultivating thoughtful young people is always a core objective for universities. Thought is the most precious treasure in life, so being a thoughtful person cannot be achieved during one's four-year campus life. Instead, it can be accomplished as a life goal. “Life might be dull at times, but your thinking must be lofty,” said President Qiu.
