Tsinghua hosts the 5th World Peace Forum
The fifth World Peace Forum was held at Tsinghua University from the 16th to the 17th of July. During the forum, participants held discussions on current global and regional security issues. Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong addressed the opening ceremony. Former State Councilor and Chairman of the World Peace Forum Tang Jiaxuan delivered a welcoming speech at the opening ceremony, hosted by Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong.
Today's era calls for win-win cooperation, inclusive co-existence, openness and sharing, and China is committed to a peaceful foreign policy and will steadfastly fulfill its international obligations, Vice Premier Liu said.
The theme of this year's Forum, "The order of Common Security: Cooperation, Inclusiveness and Open access," is highly relevant to the reality and needs of today, she said.
Liu noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed building a new type of international relations featuring win-win cooperation.
"It contributes China's wisdom and proposal for coping with the complex and grim security threats and building a common security order," she said.
The vice premier suggested countries build partnerships of equality and mutual trust, stick to win-win cooperation and abandon the zero-sum mentality, increase dialogue and consultation to strive for peace and security, and deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges to encourage mutual learning among cultures.
"The aspiration for peace and development runs deep in the genes of the Chinese nation," said Liu.
Before the opening ceremony of the forum, Liu met with former French Prime Minister Dominique Galouzeau de Villepin, former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, former Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, former European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana and former Russian Secretary of the Security Council Andrei Kokoshin.
The World Peace Forum was founded in 2012, hosted by Tsinghua University and co-organized by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. With the constant improvement since its establishment, the forum had attracted world-wide attention and welcome, Qiu Yong said on hosting the opening ceremony. He welcomed and appreciated all guests coming to Tsinghua to participate in the 5th World Peace Forum.
Tsinghua University Council Chairperson Chen Xu, University Vice Chairperson Deng Wei, and University Vice President Yang Bin attended the forum.
Representatives from 52 embassies attended the forum with 35 ambassadors participating in the opening ceremony. 43 scholars from think tanks in more than 20 countries including the UK, the U.S., Japan, India, and South Korea delivered presentations. In addition, there was strong representation from diverse range of universities and faculty, particularly the nearly 200 Chinese and international scholars of international relations.
Centered on “Cooperation, Inclusiveness and Open-access”, the two-day forum hosted ceremony lectures, canteen meetings, panel talks, press conferences and conference discussions for all participants to bolster communication and understanding in order to promote the “Global Security Order” collaboratively.
