Tsinghua President Qiu Yong visits partners in San Francisco Bay Area
Tsinghua & UC Berkeley to start dual degree program
At local time May 10th, after finishing his visits to Universities on US East Coast, President Qiu led his delegation to the San Francisco Bay Area to pay visits to Universities, research institutes and corporations which have cooperative ties with Tsinghua University. Vice President of Tsinghua University Yang Bin accompanied President Qiu Yong on this tour.
Tsinghua university and UC Berkeley sign the TBSI Dual Degree Program Agreement.
Following the enrollment of the inaugural class of Ph.D. students at the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI), Tsinghua University and University of California, Berkeley signed the TBSI Dual Degree Program Agreement on May 10, at Berkeley.

It is the first overseas dual-degree program UC Berkeley has ever had and the only program of its kind in operation
The dual-degree program, jointly designed and taught by faculty from both universities, will be launched in the fall of 2016.
President Qiu visits the Laurence Berkeley National Laboratory
After completing the program in two and a half to three years, students will be able to obtain two master's degrees: a Master of Science in either Environmental Science and New Energy or Data Science and Information Technology from Tsinghua University, and a Master of Engineering in Engineering Leadership from UC Berkeley.
Both Tsinghua and UC Berkeley play an active role in the continued development of TBSI.

Nicholas Dirks, Chancellor of UC Berkeley, pointed out that this program is “the very first of its kind at Berkeley”.
During his visit to UC Berkeley, Tsinghua President Qiu Yong met with Berkeley professors working with TBSI, and those appointed as affiliated professors at Tsinghua.
These professors, employed by both UC Berkeley and Tsinghua, will be the backbone of the TBSI personnel.

During his stay in the Bay Area, President Qiu attended the launching ceremony of the Tsinghua-Berkeley Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate Change, and visited the Laurence Berkeley National Laboratory. President Qiu also had talks with Apple CEO Tim Cook. In the headquarters of Apple in Silicon Valley, Qiu visited its Research and Development Center and learned some detailed information about Apple’s technological innovations.
President Qiu also took time to meet Tsinghua alumni and attended related activities during his visit.
