Tsinghua University Commencement Held, 500 International Students Receive Degrees

Tsinghua University Commencement 2012 for post-graduates and under-graduates were held separately in the Comprehensive Gymnasium on the mornings of July 3 and 4, 2012. More than 4,100 post-graduates and 3,300 under-graduates complete their studies at Tsinghua University and receive academic degrees. President of Tsinghua and Chairman of the Degree Conferral Committee Chen Jining, Tsinghua University Council Chairman Hu Heping, and other university leaders awarded degrees and certificates to the new graduates.

The number of international graduates reaches a new record high, which includes 11 Doctors, 269 Masters and 219 Bachelors.

Among the international Master’s graduates, five of them are awarded as the Tsinghua University Outstanding Master’s Graduates, accounting for 6% of the total for this year. They are: Rojas Jaramillo Valeria (Columbia), School of Economics and Management; Katsuki Takafumi (Japan), School of Economics and Management; Hwa Charles Chun Jue (USA), School of Economics and Management; Fung Elizabeth Hoi Yung (UK), School of Public Policy and Management; Manika Mekprayoonthong (Thailand), School of Public Policy and Management.

In addition, thirteen international Master’s graduates are prized as the Tsinghua University Outstanding Master’s Dissertations, accounting for 7.3% of the total for this year. In addition to the aforementioned five, other eight international graduates awarded are as follows: Tjokro Wimantara (Indonesia), School of Economics and Management; Storaa Camilla (Norway), School of Economics and Management; Shin Dong Hyun (Korea), School of Economics and Management; Urs Andreas Laeuppi (Switzerland), School of Economics and Management; Hu Diana (USA), School of Public Policy and Management; Bugayevska Kateryna (Ukraine), School of Humanities and Social Science; Siew Yee Ruh (Malaysia), School of Humanities and Social Science; Fish Eric Henderson (USA), School of Journalism and Communication.

Among the international Bachelor’s graduates, four dissertations are awarded as the Tsinghua University Outstanding Undergraduate Comprehensive Dissertations. They are: Tan Guang Ruey (Malaysia), School of Architecture; Yoon Suah (Korea), School of Architecture; Lee Seung Hyun (Korea), School of Humanities and Social Sciences; Lee Kyung Won (Korea), School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Along with the increase of international graduates and their nationalities, this year’s commencement is featured with more improvements to reflect on the development of international education of Tsinghua University. Not only the commencement agendas were provided with Chinese-English bilingual versions, but also the pictures viewing international students’ study and life in Tsinghua, as well as the national banners of 68 countries from which the international graduates come, were broadcast on the LED screen at the ceremony.
