Professor Liu Binjie, Minister of China's General Administration of Press and Publication, was appointed Dean of School of Journalism and Communications at Tsinghua University on Thursday.

Liu vowed to contribute to the training of talents and the development of Tsinghua journalism school on Thursday’s ceremony where he officially took the post in front of all the students and faculty from that school.

“I felt the compelling responsibility to train media talents in the era when human life has been significantly changed by the revolution in the media industry, ” Liu said on the ceremony.

Liu said that during his tenure, he would make full advantage of Tsinghua University’s abundant teaching and research resources to train excellent future media professionals for the nation and global community.

“Practice should always be laid as the foundation of quality journalism,” Liu said, adding that Tsinghua’s journalism school would keep its tradition of integrating teaching and practice.

He would also put diversity and comprehensiveness into his to-do list, trying to encourage different media philosophies and continuing to recruit qualified faculty and competent students across the nation and the world.

Professor Xie Weihe, vice president of Tsinghua University, made the announcement of Liu’s appointment. Professor Hu Heping, chair of the Tsinghua University Council, presented the appointment certificate to the new dean.

Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communications was established in 2002. Since the passing-away of the school’s founding Dean/Professor Fan Jingyi in November, 2010, this position has been vacant until Dean Liu’s recent appointment.
