2011 Top Ten News Stories

 

 The Tsinghua News Center announces 2011's Top Ten Tsinghua News Stories based on online voting and experts’ ratings. The following list of events is organized by date:

   Nineteen Tsinghua research achievements were recognized at the 2010 State Science and Technology Awards January 14th, ranking first among Chinese universities. The research on Radiation inspection technology for defects in large-scale objects, achieved by Professor Kang Kejun and his colleagues, won the State Technological Invention Award first prize. The research on Key technology and equipment for emergency response platform systems, achieved by academician Fan Weicheng and his colleagues, won the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award first prize.
   The "Tsinghua Xuetang Talents Program" was inaugurated April 14th. Renowned scientists, including famous mathematician, Fields Award winner and Wolf Prize winner Shing-Tung Yau, Turing Award Winner Professor Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhu Bangfen, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhang Xi, renowned structural biologist Shi Yigong, and Professor Zheng Quanshui will be chief professors of the Tsinghua Xuetang mathematics class, computer class, physics class, chemistry class, life science class, and mechanics class. Tsinghua Xuetang, the recently refurbished and modernized and oldest campus building, will be the teaching building for this Program starting December 5th. 
   Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Tsinghua on the eve of its centennial anniversary. Other state and Communist Party leaders including Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, He Guoqiang, and Zhu Rongji visited Tsinghua or listened to the report from Tsinghua University leaders at this time and extended their congratulations to Tsinghua’s Centenary.
   The Global Summit of University Presidents was held on April 23rd, assembling presidents from over 130 prestigious universities from five continents. State Councilor Liu Yandong delivered a keynote speech. The GSUP Consensus was passed at the summit. 
    Tsinghua University celebrated its centennial anniversary on April 24th. Chinese President Hu Jintao attended and delivered a speech during the celebration. Top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and other state and Communist Party leaders including Jia Qinglin, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, and Wu Guanzheng attended the celebration at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Over 8,000 Tsinghua alumni, faculty, and students participated in the celebration meeting. Meanwhile, Tsinghua alumni around the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of Tsinghua in various forms. The Tsinghua Centenary Celebration Gala was held in front of Tsinghua’s Main Building April 24th.
   The Nature Publishing Index 2010 China was published in May. Published as a supplement to Nature, the 2010 Index for China ranks both research institutions and cities in China. Tsinghua ranks first among Chinese universities.
 

  The Shenzhou-8 spacecraft docked with the Tiangong-1 target spacecraft on November 3rd. During the design, development, and manufacturing process of the Shenzhou-8 spacecraft and the Tiangong-1 target spacecraft, several research teams from Tsinghua’s School of Aerospace and Department of Electronic Engineering contributed greatly, investigating and solving problems associated with orbit mechanics, astronauts’ health monitoring systems, rendezvous and docking, and strength and service life of the crafts.

 

   Three Tsinghua Professors were selected to be members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in December. Previously, Tsinghua had 39 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 34 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The total number of scholars in the two acadamies from Tsinghua consistently ranks first among all Chinese universities. In 2011, two Tsinghua teachers were selected as Renowned Teachers of the Nation and eight received the National Outstanding Youth Science Funds.
   Three research achievements were selected for the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress awards at Chinese universities in 2011, ranking first among Chinese universities.
