Tenth Anniversary of the Department of Industrial Engineering

 Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University celebrated its tenth anniversary in the Main Building on October 15th. Tsinghua University President Gu Binglin, faculty and students from the IE department, and professors from universities both at home and abroad as well as representatives from companies and industry attended the celebration meeting held that afternoon.

The meeting addressed four aspects, including teaching and education, pursuing excellence in research, cooperation with industry, and future development. Some professors and IE Department graduates spoke at the meeting, sharing their feelings and life experiences spent at the IE department.

President Gu delivered a speech, extending congratulations to the tenth anniversary of IE department. He remarked that since 2001 when Professor Salvendy accepted the invitation to become the Founding Chair of Tsinghua’s IE department, the Department has realized its plan to start from a high point and be open to development.

As the Founding Chair Professor and Department Head, Gavriel Salvendy, together with Professor Zheng Li, has turned the fledgling department into the number one industrial engineering department in the country. Reviewing the past ten years, Professor Salvendy noted that working in Tsinghua’s IE has been delightful, because of the excellent and cooperative faculty, the diligent and hardworking staff is efficient and always cheerful, and the students are excellent. Talking about the goal he set ten years ago when he became the head, he said that it has been fully achieved and has even been surpassed.

Professor Salvendy will Chair the international advisory board of IE Department in the coming two years. He has established a foundation with a donation of one million yuan, providing funds for Head of the IE department.
