Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, who is currently visiting China, visited Tsinghua University on May 28th and delivered a speech on climate change and environmental protection. Four members of the US House of Representatives, Mr. Edward Markey, Mr. James Sensenbrenner, Jr., Mr. Earl Blumenauer, and Mr. Jay Inslee accompanied Ms. Pelosi on her visit.
Tsinghua University President Gu Binglin discussed ideas on education and low carbon energy research with Ms. Pelosi prior to the speech. The Chairman of the National People's Congress Foreign Affairs Committee Mr. Li Zhaoxing, the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Zhou Wenzhong, Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe, and Tsinghua Vice President Yuan Si also participated in the discussion.
During her speech, Ms. Pelosi noted that she and her delegation came to China to discuss the challenge of climate change. “The US and China should understand each other and learn from each other,” Ms. Pelosi commented. She emphasized the importance of science and technology in environmental protection and climate change and encouraged the students to shoulder their responsibility by finding innovative ways to combat climate change and environmental pollution.
Ms. Pelosi answered several questions from the students about people to people communication, energy saving strategies and careers for women after her speech.
