Professor John R. Searle, world-famous cognitive scientist and Willis S. and Marion Slusser Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Language, UC Berkeley, delivered a speech entitled “Social Ontology” to the Tsinghua Forum on August 15. Professor Searle was appointed Guest Professor of Tsinghua University at the conferral ceremony held that day.
Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe had a discussion with Professor Searle prior to the ceremony, exchanging ideas on research and discipline development. Vice President Xie attended the conferral ceremony and presented the honorary appointment book to Professor Searle.
Professor John Searle got his B. A. degree in 1955, M. A. and D.Phil. in 1959 in Oxford University. He was a lecturer in Oxford for 3 Years. Since then, he has been working in University of California, Berkeley for over forty years.
The Tsinghua Forum, sponsored by the Academic Affairs Committee of the university, will feature speakers addressing a wide range of topics, including science and technology, economy, society and culture as they are related to the development of China and the world. The Forum will be held four times a year.
